Chaos is a part of life. As much as we wish to control what happens, we are ultimately at the mercy of outside forces and unpredictable events. Chaos theory suggests that the smallest of variations can lead to an expansive change in future outcomes. Contemplating chaos challenges our strength, perseverance, and sanity. It can induce feelings of anxiety and uncertainty.
This project explores light and movement, embodying chaos through photography, illumination, and symmetry. I began by photographing the neon lights of downtown Kansas City at night using camera movement to create abstractions. I experimented merging together multiples of the same image, ultimately forming symmetrical patterns. Introducing yet another image disrupted that symmetry and pushed the overall piece back into chaos and disorder. The photographs in this series are printed on transparency film and glossy photo paper. Light shines through the translucent layers creating an additional experience for the viewer. This fusion of imagery forms an unexpected combination that brings a sense of unpredictability and evokes wonder. The overall piece incorporates small to large scale prints to be considered separately or as one, hinting at the idea of how chaos evolves from something small to monumental.
The Expansion of Chaos, is an experience in darkness and light that allows us to observe, contemplate, and imagine. Are we overwhelmed with feelings of anxiety and uncertainty? Or do we become absorbed and mesmerized in the moment? Are we surrendering to the unknown? Are we embracing the chaos that forever changes us?
Is it possible to find peace and beauty in the unpredictable?
